Removal of Lumps and Bumps

Safe removal of eyelid cysts, lesions, and skin growths

What is lid lesion removal?

Eyelid lumps and bumps are extremely common and include chalazia (meibomian cysts), papillomas, skin tags, and sebaceous cysts. While most are harmless, they can be uncomfortable, unsightly, or occasionally interfere with vision or eyelid function.

At Vale Eye Surgeons, eyelid lesion removal is performed by appropriately trained surgeons with expertise in eye surgery and skin pathology. This ensures every lesion is properly assessed and managed using the most appropriate medical or surgical technique.

How does it work?

The removal technique depends on the type and location of the lesion. We utilize modern techniques to ensure high-quality functional and aesthetic results:

  • Surgical Excision: Surface lesions such as papillomas and skin tags are excised with fine instruments. The wound is closed with delicate sutures or allowed to heal naturally.
  • CO2 Laser: For many surface growths, we can treat lesions precisely with a CO2 laser, which often results in less downtime and excellent cosmetic outcomes.
  • Chalazion Management: These are typically drained through a small incision on the inside of the eyelid, leaving no visible scar. For those seeking a non-surgical option, we also offer Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy to treat the underlying inflammation.

If a lesion has unusual features or if malignancy is suspected, tissue can be sent for histological analysis to confirm the diagnosis.

What to expect

1. Assessment

Your surgeon will examine the lesion using a slit lamp microscope and discuss the best approach for removal. If there is any concern about the nature of the lesion, a biopsy may be recommended. Prices for lid lesion procedures start from £500.

2. Procedure

Most removals are performed under local anaesthetic as a minor procedure, taking 15-30 minutes. The area is numbed with a small injection, and you can return home shortly afterward.

3. Aftercare

You may experience mild bruising or swelling for a few days. Antibiotic ointment is usually applied to the area. If sutures were used, these are typically removed after 5-7 days. Histology results, where applicable, are usually available within two weeks.

When should I see a specialist?

You should seek assessment if an eyelid lump is growing, changing colour, bleeding, causing eyelash loss, or has been present for a few weeks without improvement. Patients with suspicious lesions are seen urgently, and fast-track referral for further treatment can be arranged if needed.
