Expert assessment and treatment of corneal surface irregularity and irregular astigmatism
Corneal surface irregularities encompass a range of conditions in which the smooth, regular curvature of the cornea is disrupted, degrading the quality of vision in ways that spectacles or standard contact lenses often cannot fully correct. Causes include corneal scarring from previous infection or trauma, irregular astigmatism following laser refractive surgery, and surface disease that distorts the tear film.
At Vale Eye Surgeons, the assessment and management of corneal surface irregularity is led by a consultant ophthalmologist with specialist fellowship training in cornea and ocular surface disease.
Detailed evaluation using corneal topography, tomography, anterior segment OCT, and epithelial mapping allows your surgeon to characterise the location and severity of the irregularity and identify the most appropriate management strategy.
Treatment is tailored to your specific condition and may include optimisation of the ocular surface, specialist contact lens fitting, surgical procedures such as superficial keratectomy or phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK), or a combination of approaches. Where irregularity has arisen following previous surgery, careful planning ensures the safest and most effective path to improving your vision.
